Why Support Orphans

Many people have asked “Why is The Master’s Foundation focusing so much attention on the orphans of Ukraine?” “Why is so much of your budget spent on renovating orphanages, sending humanitarian aid, buying Christmas gifts for orphans, paying salaries for Christian workers at orphanages?”

These are great questions. We are grateful that they are being asked because they encourage us to ask the tough question

Why do we do what we do?”

We must first look to the Word of God for the answer. Did you know that there are over 200 verses in the Bible that talks about the poor and God’s provision for them? All throughout the Old and New Testaments, God talks about people looking after the orphans, widows, the poor and the needy. We are commanded to hear the cries of the poor and to meet their needs. The Word of God actually pronounces a curse over those who do not give to the poor (see Proverbs 28:27).  In addition, Jesus warns what will happen in Matthew 25 if we do not give to the least of these. Lastly, James tells us in his letter that pure religion is to care for the orphans and widows. As Christians, believers, we cannot help but give to those who are less fortunate. In response to God’s love for us, we can’t help but reach out to those who are in need.

From the Scriptures, you can understand that all of our giving to the many orphans in Ukraine is because the Word of God instructs us to do so. It is also because of the love God has shown us and we cannot help but do something for those who lack the necessities of life and who do not know the love of Jesus Christ.

Another reason we do what we do is that we believe in investing in the next generation. We are told Ukraine has at least 100,000 orphans, possibly up to 200,000. The numbers really don’t matter, the orphans are here and that generation will have a huge impact of what Ukraine will be 10 years, 20 years and 50 years from now. By investing in the younger generation and pouring God’s love into them, we will make a positive impact on the future of this nation.

How can we make a difference? One orphan at a time. We have many testimonies from children to youth telling of what God has accomplished in their lives through our efforts. They all speak of how their lives have been changed, even through the hardships of being without a parent. How did these changes occur? By caring for their physical needs, by sharing the love of Jesus Christ with them, by providing Christian role models in their lives and by praying for each one of them. It is so encouraging to us to see young lives changed and stabilized to become productive citizens and perhaps even leaders of this nation.

Because we believe in orphans we want to bless them as Jesus did. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus said “…let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these…and He took the children in His arms, put His hands on them and blessed them”.

We are asking that you will join with us in prayer and support as we continue to bless the orphans of Ukraine. They are the future of a wonderful country and we are both honoured and humbled that God has entrusted them into our care.

As we meet the needs of the orphans and care for them, God will do His part and change their destinies. This thought is declared in 1 Samuel 2:8, “God raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; He seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honour.”
